Yi Pian Xiao Bai (一片小白) translates to "a piece of small white." We preserve the original tea name out of respect for the tea master Chen Xingbei, from whom this tea comes.
Jianyang is a renowned tea land, as it is the birthplace of Xiao Bai Cha in Zhangdun village and the origin of the Shui Xian cultivar in Xiaohu village. In the 18th century (1772-1782), the first Xiao Bai Cha (small white tea, the white tea made from small leaf varietal) in the modern sense was created by the Xiao family in Zhangdun village, using tender shoots of the local Caicha varietal. In 2019, Jianyang's white tea crafting technique was recognized as intangible cultural heritage of Fujian province, and Master Chen Xingbei is acknowledged as one of inheritors of this technique. Unlike some commercialized tea masters who act as a mere figurehead, Master Chen, now in his seventies, continues to personally handcraft his tea together with his son.
This Yi Pian Xiao Bai is an authentic Gong Mei of premium quality, both in the sense of the Caicha raw material and its harvest standard of one bud with two leaves. It is meticulously compressed into a beautiful piece and sealed individually in a sachet. The packing effectively isolates moisture and oxygen, creating a perfect environment for the slow aging process of white tea. The 2023 version of this tea embodies the characteristics of fresh Gong Mei, boasting delicate sweetness, pleasant floral and vegetal notes, and a smooth texture that leave your palate refreshed and relaxed.
Additionally, a limited quantity of the same tea from the 2019 production is in stock. Thanks to the excellent packaging, the tea undergoes an extra slow aging process. However, there is still a noticeable flavor difference between the 2019 and 2023 versions, making the 2019 version an ideal educational material for distinguishing white tea aged under optimal conditions from those stored in humid and aerobic environments.
