While undoubtedly being an impeccable treasure, this tea is unfortunately shrouded in mystery, with very few recorded details. The exact production year and place are unknown, as is the producer and the source of the raw material. In fact, it is often challenging to obtain comprehensive information about a tea that has been aged for such a long period like 30 years, especially in 2004 when we acquired this tea, we were still in our early stages of exploring Puerh. Nonetheless, the tea speaks for itself; any doubts dissipate after the first sip.
This Mid 1990s Sheng Puerh exhibits surprisingly excellent balance across various aspects.
In flavor: the harshness commonly found in young Sheng has completely faded away. What was once bitter and astringent has undergone a radical transformation into a cup of mellow and calming tea, potentially confusing some beginners with Shou due to its remarkably "mature" flavor profile. It pleasantly highlights gentle yet truly complex flavors of a genuine aged Puerh, with a round and smooth texture, providing a satisfying mouthfeel and swallowing sensation. All of these showcase the balance in its current rich flavors, as well as in the continuity of the taste transformation.
In aroma: comforting aging aroma accompanied by dry old wood notes, especially camphorwood, free of the unpleasant unventilated warehouse smell that often presents in many aged Puerh, indicating that the tea was stored in a clean environment with moderate humidity. This demonstrates the unusual balance between deep aging and fair storage in this tea, since every Puerh drinker knows that humid storage quickens the aging process but also produces identifiable notes both in taste and smell.
In preparation: following our recommended parameters, it continuously provides steady intensity and rich taste during numerous infusions, showing the balance in flavor stability.
In appearance: the liquor shows a bright reddish-brown color, almost similar to the liquor of a Shou Puerh; however, the steeped leaves remain elastic even after being aged for almost 30 years. In this aspect, rather than balance, it is almost a contradiction, but all the explanation should lie in the high-quality raw material and the good storage conditions.
