There are countless potters making Zisha teapots in Yixing. These potters vary greatly in experience, craftsmanship, and aesthetic perception, with many holding different levels of professional titles. Among them is a special group, usually over sixty years old, who have honed their technical skills over a lifetime of Zisha pottery but do not possess any official titles. As a result, they are often considered artisans rather than artists, and their teapots are priced lower. Fan Liangjun, now almost seventy years old and the author of this series of teapots, is one of them.
These teapots are classic designs, carefully crafted from authentic Zisha clay. They offer economical prices, elegant shapes, and smooth pouring. These are ideal for daily use, as well as for being the first teapot when starting with Zisha ceramics. Please note that they are made using the Ban Shou Gong technique, which means that the body is primarily shaped by manual patting, but with the assistance of a mold in the final finishing. A Ban Shou Gong Zisha teapot still requires a high level of craftsmanship and has significant aesthetic value; it is very different from the so-called "Yixing teapots" that are machine-molded or made by slip casting.
The photos were taken under natural light and not edited. There may be subtle nuance when you see the teapot under different lighting.
